Hello Cousin,
Your John Gaw b 1801 is the son of Thomas Gaw & Nancy Hood, d/o Rev. War Vet Thos Hood, formerly of Greenville Co. SC. Thomas Gaw & Nancy Hood Gaw moved in 1812 to White County, TN, then later to Jackson County, Tennessee. (See White County Court House Chauncery Notes, Vol E, pg 36. Nancy Hood Gaw died in 1839; Thomas Gaw then married a woman by the name of Arrettia Stafford, aka Mrs. Abijah Kelly at 13. On the 1860 Jackson Co. TN Census, she is 68 and Thomas is 82. He died before oct-Nov 1867 and she lived until 1871.

Thomas Gaw's father is also named John Gaw; he died in 1788 in Abbeville District, SC leaving a widow named Violet. No maiden name has been found to date by 40 plus other Gaw family Cousins on line.

I descend from Erasmus Gaw and Mary Rutledge. Erasmus's father is found on the 1800 SC Census, page 251 but not the 1790 census. He would have been 13-14 years old and should be in the house of his Mother's family or other relatives but has not been found at all.

John Gaw b 1801 in SC was married to a Nancy Pridemore of Kentucky and their divorce papers were approved by the Tennessee Congress in 1855. John appears to have taken a 2d wife named Mary on the 1860 Census and died about 1862-63. His more well known son named Francis Marion, married a Sarah Hamilton and they moved to Young County Texas after 1871. FM Gaw is buried in Good Hope Cemetery, Parvin Twp, Denton County and he died in 1897 while his 17 year old son Johnnie died in 1895. Sarah Gaw is buried in the Olney Cemetery, Olney, YOung County, Texas.

Please share with me your linage. my E-mail is gawbuck@@sbcglobal.net

I am a Gaw in search of more cousins I'm related to John's younger brother Erasmus (1805-1865). Erasmus had 2 more brothers, Elias (1814-1899) and Wiley (1807-1877) who all married Rutledge sisters; another brother Andrew died young (1812-1814). Your John Gaw had 6 sisters. All total there were 11 children born to Thomas Gaw and Nancy Hood from Greenville CO SC who moved to Jackson County, Tn. Only 9 lived to inherit his estate from his 2d wife Arrettia (Rittar) Stafford Kelly in 1867.
