William Hashe, Jr. and wife Nancy Anderson are buried o n their own landnear the home of Boyden Hash, son of William III near Fox Virgi nia.Nancy is the daughter of John & Mary Anderson from New Jersey.

"Panther Hunt"

William Hash, Jr., son of William and Eleanor (Osborne) Hashe, was bor nin 1775 in Grayson County, Virginia. He was a large land owner andskilled mar ksman. He enjoyed the chase and was a fearless hunter of wildanimals, for whic h Grayson County was once famed.

It is related that on one occasion, in earl y fall, after bagging a numberof squirrels, being some distance from his home, he thought it wise toskin and dress the squirrels to reserve the meat. Coming to a
small mountain stream, he dressed the squirrels and was replacing them in his hunting jacket when, hearing a noise behind him, he observed a largepanther , crouched and ready to spring on him. As Mr. Hash turned aroundhis gun the pa nther ran away.

He immediately returned home, dispatched his several sons to the homes ofhis neighbors with word to bring in the dogs and guns for a panthe r chase.

The men of the neighborhood were soon assembled, with guns and dogs , asrequested. Going to the place where Mr. Hash had first sighted theanimal, the dogs "hit the trail". Soon the giant cat was tree'd. Aconference was held as to which one or how many of the men assembledshould be chosen to shoot the p anther, now safely at bay (as it no doubtbelieved) in the top of a giant tree o f the forest.

Finally, two men were chosen, one to shoot the animal's eye an d the otherone just behind the shoulder so as to hit its heart. At a given sig nal, both men fired. Both made direct hits. However, notwithstanding thedeadly aim of the mountaineer's rifles, the panther fell to the groundand mortally wo unded a number of the dogs before expiring. Measured fromhead to tail this pan ther must have been the "grandfather" of allpanthers, according to tradition.

Peter's Cave

On another occasion while on a hunt, Mr. Hash and his compan ions withthe aid of their dogs, ran a panther into a cave beneath what is known asPanther Rock or, Peter's Cave, on Bridle Creek.

The dogs could not go int o the cave and withstand or overcome theferocious claws of the infuriated beast . In his party was a man namedPeter, who being perplexed at not being able to induce or force the
beast from the cave and its hiding place, remarked; "Boys, a Christianought not to be afraid of anything. I'm going in and get that Panth er".

Against the advice and over the protests of his companions, Peter did g ointo the cave, and by skillful manuvering, placed himself in a postion tokill the entrapped panther and haul it from the cave.

.... Therefore, this spot w as called by some, "Panther Rock" and byothers, "Peter's Cave".

"Of this son John, (second Jr.) we know little. Following the sal e ofhis 250 acres (inherited) tract at the mouth of Bridle Creek, John "2ndJr." was said to have gone to Ashe County North Carolina ... No further
record of him or his descendents"
"Apparently" (wrote Rev. W.A. Hash and/or) all the son s of John Hashe,Sr. left Grayson County between 1787 and 17 Mar 1815." On the latter day... George Livesay (m. Nancy, dau of Ephraim Osborne, Sr.) received a grant for the same land which had been patented to John Hashe, 1773 (-4)deed Bk -3, page 340, 20 Feb 1816 PLAT Bk-1, p. 403).
We suggest that this John "2nd J r." followed others of his brothers, whohad pushed into Tennessee ca. 1806-10. Various of these Hashes stoppingfirst in Hawkins and/or Jefferson counties, bu t not remaining long enoughto be tabulated in the succeeding census - 1810/1820 .
Tennessee census - 1820 ... we find three Johns (Hashes) living in Whitecoun ty Tennessee. John Hashe, "1st Jr." was not one of these three. Weknow this b ecause we find him living in Rock Island in Warren County(Warren adjoins White) in the same census "Warren County - 1820")

The White County Census - 1820:
Three Johns/vis. "John Hash & wife, under age 45; 10-ch/under age 26"
"John H ash & wife, over age 45; 7-ch/under age 16"
"John Hash & wife, over age 45; 5- ch/under age 26"

This last John we suspect may have been "2nd Jr." John. (S ee WhiteCounty Deed, Sparta Court House).
